History of Andy’s Frozen Custard
Origins & Founding (1986)
Andy’s Frozen Custard was born on March 19, 1986, in Osage Beach, Missouri, founded by John and Carol Kuntz. Inspired by a frozen custard shop in Milwaukee, they sought guidance from Leon’s Frozen Custard, a Milwaukee institution since 1942, and named their new venture after their son, Andy.
Growth & Legacy
From the original shop, the concept expanded quickly to Springfield, Missouri, where Andy (and his wife Dana) learned the ropes from the ground up. The business grew on a philosophy of hiring great people, treating them well, and ensuring top-notch service and product quality.
Over the decades, Andy’s expanded into 15 states and now operates over 170 locations (as of 2025) spread across the Midwest, South, and Southeast.
A Custard Experience Like No Other
Andy’s is committed to a simple but powerful principle: serve custard made fresh hourly, using just high-quality ingredients—cream, sugar, vanilla extract, egg yolks, and a few secret elements—churned slowly for minimal air and maximum creaminess.
Their proprietary machines, custom-built to precise specs, ensure each store maintains the signature texture and flavor. There’s typically one machine each for chocolate and vanilla custard per location.
Innovation & Seasonal Specialties
While vanilla and chocolate are mainstays, Andy’s continually experiments with seasonal creations like Blueberry, Pumpkin Pie, and Candy Cane concretes. Baked‑fresh waffle cones also make a return, enhancing classics like the “Nutty Waffle Crunch Concrete”
Quality is more than just the custard: brownies, pies, shortcakes, cookies, and roasted nuts are all prepared in-store or shipped fresh weekly from Chicago. Everything is crafted to ensure premium flavor in every bite—even if a treat isn’t perfect, the promise is to remake it free of charge.
Reaching 40 & Beyond
Andy’s is celebrating nearly 40 years of serving frozen custard. To honor this milestone, the brand is launching the “Sweet Since ’86” 40th Anniversary Tour, beginning in early 2026 and visiting over 170 stores with celebrations, giveaways, and special deals
The company has also forged strong ties with NASCAR and motorsports, sponsoring teams like Richard Childress Racing and drivers including Austin Dillon and Anthony Alfredo, with special treats like the Three‑Crete Concrete tied into events and promotion.
From humble beginnings in Missouri to becoming the largest frozen custard-only franchise in the U.S., Andy’s Frozen Custard has stayed true to a simple: serve premium custard, made fresh hourly, with great service, in a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.
